Yak and Pak Week

9th-12th grade

Some of our campers have a hard time choosing between two equally good options. Take for instance, the chance to go backpacking or the chance to go kayaking. How could one be expected to choose between these equally good options!?!

That's why we have the "Yak and Pak." To give you a taste of both of these great activities.

Our route this year starts on the north end of the West Canada Wilderness with campers wearing backpacks and ends with kayaks in Indian Lake overlooking some of the finest scenery in the Adirondacks.

Sunday as camp starts

10:30 Worship in the Chapel-by-the-Lake. All are welcome and camp offers a brunch afterwards. (Donations accepted)

12:00 Lunch/Summer Staff Meeting

1:00 Volunteer Meeting down in Lakeside Lodge to get to know the other volunteers and summer staff

2:30 Camper Registration Begins. Campers will register with their parent or guardian and then go to the nurse to make sure that all medical information is correct and that any medications are checked in. After that they will receive their cabin assignments!

3:30 Meet your guides in the Center of Camp and begin packing your backpack for the week. Make sure you have gone over the list of what to bring sent to you when you signed up for camp. There will be a place to leave some things in camp if you have brought more than what you will need on the trail.

The staff will also hand out personal and group gear. Things like tents, stoves, pots, waterbottles, sleeping matts, etc. We want to make sure that everyone has what they need to have a great week in the woods.

5:00 Head out to the Wilderness Area which will be home for tonight and Friday night. We'll have our first "Outcamp" dinner and get settled in for the evening.

We'll want to have lights out not too late. You've got a lot to do tomorrow!

Monday:            We’ve got to get up early and get our stuff packed in the van because we want to hit the trail as soon as possible. We’ll travel north to the town of Indian Lake and then turn south to the Cedar River Flow: one of the entrances to the West Canada Lakes Wilderness. We’ll hike along the Beaver Pond Outlet and make camp on one of the Cedar Lakes. Shhh!! Can you hear the Loons?!

Tuesday:             Break camp and hike through some of the wildest areas of the Adirondack Mountains. This is French Louie Country and we’ll stop by the remains of his hermitage to prove it! After going around Mud Lake and West Lake we will head back east towards Pillsbury Lake. This is a good long day, but camp will be worth it.

Wednesday:            Today is a day for changes.  From our camp we’ll hike to the Old Military Road and out to Sled Harbor. (Anyone up for a quick jog up Pillsbury Mtn?).

The van will meet us and take us to our put in at the Indian Lake Campground. From there we will paddle over to John Mack Bay. Because we can’t camp on the lake, we will beach our canoes and find our campsite a mile inland on John Mack Pond.

Thursday:            We will have a day of it paddling north to our destination: Baldface Mountain. This will be an ideal place to spend our last night on the trail. Perched above Indian Lake, this small peak gives commanding views of the lake, Snowy Mountain, and the sunset. It will be a memorable evening.

Friday:            Our last day out we may want to hit the water early. The prevailing winds will be in our faces, but by now we are strong enough for just about anything! We’ll paddle back down Indian Lake and get picked up at the boat launch in the campground. Our evening will be back home in Fowler’s Wilderness Area.

Saturday:            Rise and shine.  Bring our gear to Summit house and enjoy breakfast at Suits Hall before being reunited with your family.  We’ll have some time to swap addresses and say farewell to our new-found friends and the Adirondacks ….. but only until next year!

Camp ends on Saturday morning after morning watch, a great breakfast, and a fare-well group hug and blessing. Parents are asked to be to camp by 10:00AM in order to pick up their child. The store will be open and families are encouraged to roam around and hear the stories of what happened during this amazing and special week
